About the data

Birth country. Each laureate is placed in the country where they were born, not where they worked or held citizenship.
Modern borders. Birthplaces are mapped to today's countries. Someone born in the Russian Empire in a town that is now in Poland counts for Poland.
People, not prizes. We count distinct laureates. Marie Curie won twice and counts once. This follows the same approach as Wikipedia's list of Nobel laureates by country, though individual totals can differ slightly.
Up to date as of the data date below. Prizes announced after that date, including the rest of the current year's prizes, appear once the data is regenerated.
Organizations excluded. Prizes to organizations, such as the Red Cross, have no birth country and are left out, along with laureates whose birthplace is unknown.
Categories. Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economics. The Economics prize dates from 1969 and is not an original Nobel prize.
Normalised views. The per-population and per-GDP rates use today's population and GDP for all years, whatever year range is selected. Countries under 1M people are not rated.
